We have developed and scaled-up a program model whereby amenable climbing facilities become accessible and adapted for participation by disabled veterans and the associated community. Climbing facility management and V.A. coordinators become educated by mutually coaching two or more adaptive climbing sessions. Above Limits provides and demonstrates the specialized equipment, route-setting and harnessing, safety and sensitivity issues during this session with the participants directly. Other session participants have often included recreational therapists, occupational therapists, athletic coordinators, counselors and volunteers.
Above Limits and its founders have over 20 years of experience adapting walls, routes and equipment to the special needs of all climbers. We have partnered with Easter Seals, Spina Bifida Association, Soldiers to Summits, No Barriers USA and IM Able Foundation for dozens of programs and hundreds of climbing sessions; directly coaching thousands of participants throughout this time. In central Pennsylvania, we have also partnered with 2 climbing facilities: Climbnasium, near the Carlisle War College and Spooky Nook Sports near the Lebanon V.A.
We have gained rich experience coaching kids and adults with paralysis, extreme autism, TBI, PTSD and acrophobia. We can continue to scale-up this approach and model to benefit more VA Hospitals, regional climbing facilities and participants.
